When we are looking for a Web Hosting Services provider, one of the first things we often have to consider is what operating system the server will run. Here, I am not about to prove that one OS is better or worse than the other, and if you already have a preference, then I recommend you stick with it only. This is not to convince you to change.

Several Operating Systems to choose for Web Hosting are:
Linux: Linux is most popular operating system on the Web, because it is so cheap to install and running. Web hosting provided by using Linux is Called Linux Web Hosting.

Macintosh: Macintosh hosting servers are very uncommon. In fact, if anyone wants to host their site on a Macintosh server then, they probably have to look into hosting it them self.

UNIX: UNIX is very similar to Linux, but not as common on Web hosting services, usually because it is more expensive and the hardware is more specific for Unix to use.

Windows: Windows is also one of the most popular operating system for Web hosting providers because it has lots of support. The Web Hosting Provided by using is called as Windows Web hosting.

Work done by Server

Accessing Server: The first difference most of us notice with Web hosting Operating System is accessing their servers. Both Windows and Linux offer FTP access to our files but, only Linux will generally offer telnet or SSH access.  It is also possible to set up telnet access on Windows, but very few Web Hosting providers offer it.  FTP is a way of transferring our files from our hard drive to our Web server. Telnet and SSH are a way to open a window directly on the Web server and manipulate files right there, usually using UNIX line commands.

Difference Between Linux Web Hosting and Windows Web Hosting:

Writing Your Pages: Both Windows and Linux servers will serve HTML pages and JavaScript. But typically, Windows servers use files named as *.htm while Linux servers use files named as *.html, but there is no real difference between these names, just what we prefer.
CGI: CGI and Perl are often found on both Windows and Linux servers, but different on Linux. If we need to program forms, we should make sure that our hosting service providers provide CGI or another way to process them.
Other Server-Side Scripts: But we are not stuck with just Perl if you need to process forms. Many hosting systems offer ASP, PHP, and ColdFusion. These server side scripting options give us a lot of flexibility. ASP is more often found on Windows, while PHP is more often found on Linux systems. Cold Fusion can be found on both.
Databases: If we are going to run a dynamically driven Web site, then need a database. The two most popular are mySQL and MS-Access. mySQL runs on both Linux and Windows, but is often found on Linux servers. Access is available only for Windows.
Security: Security is very important to our Web site. Many people will argue that Windows servers have more vulnerabilities than Linux servers. But actually, they both have security problems. Security is more important thing at the hosting service's administration than it is at the operating system. If we have good administrators, our server will be more secure - irrespective to Operating System.
